Level -1 (or Level Negative One) is a full-playthrough challenge in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This challenge is nearly identical to Level Zero Double Damage, and a harder variant of Level Zero. In this run, the player plays through the game under Level Zero conditions, only to decrease Mario's max HP to 5 as early into the game as possible.
Rules
- Only upgrade Badge Points (BP) upon leveling up.
- Do not equip Badges that require 1 or more BP to use.
- Do not rank up any of Mario’s Partners.
- Decrease Mario's max HP to 5 as early as possible.
Paper Mario
In Paper Mario, the player can use Chet Rippo to decrease Mario's HP to 5 (in exchange for more BP) as early as after Chapter 1. Since he would also have to decrease FP, Mario must have 10 HP and 10 FP for him to appear. If the player perform "Log Skip", he or she can start this run as early as the Prologue.

As of May 12, 2017, no one has completed a playthrough of the game under Level -1 conditions in Paper Mario.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Chet Rippo doesn't come available until after Chapter 5, or during Chapter 5 if the player manages to unlock the warp pipe early via the "Hazard Respawn" glitch. However, it is possible to start the Level -1 run as early as Chapter 3 if the player can perform the "Bobbery Early" glitch, or as early as Chapter 2 if "Cage Skip" is also performed prior to completing Chapter 2 for the first time.
Records
In a Level -1 run for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, there exists an additional challenge in which the player may attempt the Pit of 100 Trials before or after completing the game. The player may also attempt to complete the game and the Pit without ever using the Strange Sack, an item that allows up to 20 items to be carried at once.
